Summary

The City of Medford is hiring multiple seasonal Public Works Laborers (6-month positions) to help maintain essential infrastructure across our community. In this role, you'll assist with roadway repairs, storm drainage maintenance, vegetation control, and other critical public works projects. Positions are available in both the Storm Drainage and Surface Maintenance sections, offering a variety of tasks in a team-oriented environment.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent; and
  • Must be at least 18 years of age by date of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Four (4) months of experience in construction and/or maintenance.


Available Schedule:
  • Temporary assignment up to 6 months
  • Full-time, 40 hours/week
  • Monday through Thursday, 6:00 AM - 4:30 PM, 4/10 schedule (four 10-hour days with three days off each week)
Compensation & Information on Benefits
The anticipated hiring range for thePublic Works Laborer position is $25.26(first step) to $26.52or $27.85(second or third step).The City of Medford determines starting pay based on an evaluation of relevant education, experience, andqualifications as provided by the applicant in their application materials, alongside others who perform work of comparable character consistent with the Oregon Equal Pay Act. Six steps are included in this salary range, allowing opportunity for annual movement through the steps.

Examples of Job Duties

Essential Functions of the Position:
  • Loads, drives, and unloads vehicles in transporting tools, materials, and equipment.
  • Practices safety rules and accident prevention measures.
  • Assists in the operation of, and occasionally operates equipment.
  • Performs work zone traffic control and flagging.
  • Documents a variety of work logs, maps, and recordkeeping.
  • Operates a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Performs emergency services during adverse weather conditions, which may include removing snow and debris from roadways, sanding roads, high water response, etc.
  • Responds to afterhours/on-call needs.
  • Scope of assigned area of responsibility will depend on departmental structure and is at the discretion of the Public Works Director.

Examples of responsibilities assigned to various sections may include:
  • Street Section: Repair and maintain streets, alleys, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and bridges.
  • Sewer Section: Assist and operate pipeline clearing equipment, perform pump station maintenance, perform confided space entry, assist with pipeline inspection, pipe bursting, mainline patching. mainline replacement, lateral connection repairs, and manhole repairs.
  • Traffic Section: Perform signing and striping maintenance, pavement markings, design and layout, sign construction and installation, and operation and maintenance of paint striping equipment.
  • Storm Drainage Section: Assist in cleaning of storm drainage facilities including pipes, ditches, ponds, and vegetation control. Assist and operate pipeline cleaning equipment, mowing equipment, landscape maintenance tools, assist with water quality facility maintenance, culvert installations, culvert repairs, storm mainline patches, storm mainline replacement, inlet repairs, and manhole repairs.

Work Environment & Physical Demands:
This position requires work that includes exposure to regular inside and outside noise and distractions, lighting, and HVAC systems in relation to temperature. This environment also includes interactions with the public, contact with hot and cold temperatures and a large variety of potential health and safety exposures.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the essential job functions satisfactorily. This position involves extended periods of sitting, standing, walking, crouching, bending, stooping, twisting, turning, climbing and balancing, regular limb extension, pinching and grasping, moving, lifting and carrying objects that will require frequent force of 0 - 25 pounds, occasional 26 - 74 pounds and seldom exertion of 75 - 100 pounds of force, as well as regular keyboard typing, talking and listening both in person and over the phone, and driving a wide array of motorized vehicles in all conditions. Noise exposure and hot/cold environments may also need to be tolerated. Must have the ability to use computers, phones, and technology as needed.
