JOB TITLE: Custodian; 1.0 FTE; Probationary

Salary: $19.06 - $23.28

JOB SUMMARY:
This position completes a variety of tasks in the general care of school buildings and surrounding grounds. Provides safe and clean school buildings for students, staff, and community. Performs duties with minimal supervision.

Must be able to work swing shift 3:00pm - 11:30pm

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND BESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other related duties may be assigned.
1. Follows and maintains knowledge of all applicable District policy(ies) and procedures.
2. Daily cleans and disinfects areas as assigned (i.e. rooms, halls, offices, rest rooms, cafeteria, etc.).
3. Vacuums, shampoos, sweeps, scrubs, waxes, polishes, mops and buffs all types of floor surfaces as assigned.
4. Weekly dusts each assigned room.
5. Daily washes windows, white boards, walls, doors and baseboards.
6. Cleans and polishes furniture, windows, metal work and computer screens as needed.
7. Daily washes, scrubs and disinfects restrooms and locker rooms as well as cleans sinks, fixtures, panels and drinking fountains daily.
8. Picks up and discards trash in and around assigned buildings.
9. Sets up, takes down and moves tables, chairs, equipment, shelving and partitions for meetings, athletic events and other needs as assigned.
10. Maintains indoor and outdoor lighting.
11. Checks and stocks bathroom supplies.
12. Cleans up spills (including bodily fluids) in safe and appropriate manner.
13. Responds to special requests for custodial services from staff members with supervisor approval.
14. Locks doors and windows, turns off lights and secures buildings and property as assigned.
15. Makes minor repairs (i.e., sinks, tiles, lockers, change light bulbs, etc.).
16. Empties and cleans waste containers.
17. Maintains basic grounds keeping of school property, including mowing, trimming and watering.
18. Reports safety, sanitary and fire hazards immediately to supervisor.
19. While working collaboratively with others, implements decisions within ASD established policies and procedures.
20. Interacts thoughtfully and courteously with students, staff, administrators and parents and resolves conflict in a professional manner.
21. Creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere for students and staff.
22. Works collaboratively with District and building administrators and other department staff to provide reliable service to customers.
23. Communicate clearly with coworkers and other staff.
24. Participate as an effective team member.
25. Provide impeccable customer service.
26. Maintains appropriate certifications and training hours as required.
27. Is available when needed to complete regular and emergent job duties.
28. Attends work regularly and is punctual.
29. Annually pass the District's required online training by the District's assigned due-date.

  • Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or equivalent required. Prior related work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience desired.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Works well with others from diverse backgrounds. Ability to interact with students, staff and community appropriately.
  • Language Skills: Ability to be understand and be understood by coworkers and community as needed. Ability to understand and follow written instructions such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, schedule or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in variety of situations.
  • Computer Skills: General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use e-mail.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Certificates as determined by the District including ability to obtain a valid CPR/First Aid card and a valid Oregon Drivers license. Previous hazardous materials and asbestos training preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate with others including understanding and being understood. The employee is frequently required to travel through and between buildings; conduct fine manipulation tasks, reach items in tight spaces, at heights and low to the ground. Tasks may include climbing ladders and noticing odors. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception and peripheral vision. Demonstrate ability to operate cleaning tools and other equipment.

The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate, but occasionally high. The employee is exposed to a variety of conditions including: wet or humid, work near moving parts, work in high precarious places, a variety of cleaning agents, some hazardous chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, extreme heat (i.e., boiler room), risk of electrical shock and vibration.
