Required Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent; and
  • Must be at least 18 years of age by date of hire; and
  • One (1) or more years of experience in landscape maintenance and/or operation of heavy equipment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated understanding of safety procedures and regulations in a maintenance or construction environment.
  • Previous experience working at a water or wastewater treatment facility.
  • Demonstrated experience in manual labor, particularly in construction, maintenance, or similar fields.
  • Proven ability to operate basic machinery and tools related to landscape maintenance and repair tasks.


Available Schedule:
  • Tuesday - Friday, 5:30 AM - 4:00 PM
  • During initial training, the schedule will be Monday - Thursday, 5:30 AM - 4:00 PM

The anticipated hiring range for the WRD Laborer position is $21.16(first step) to $22.22or $23.33(second or third step).The City of Medford determines starting pay based on an evaluation of relevant education, experience, andqualifications as provided by the applicant in their application materials, alongside others who perform work of comparable character consistent with the Oregon Equal Pay Act. Six steps are included in this salary range, allowing opportunity for annual movement through the steps.

Examples of Job Duties

Essential Functions of the Position:
  • Health & Safety: follows safe practices and procedures at all times; promptly reports suspected or observed safety concerns; participates in development and improvement of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs); actively contributes to WRD Safety Committee; attends required Safety Trainings.
  • Regulatory Compliance: reads and understands Stormwater Pollution Control Plan; promptly notifies Supervisor or Manager of observed or suspected noncompliance.
  • Landscaping: performs landscape maintenance duties including mowing and edging lawns, brush mowing, irrigation repair, and pruning ornamental plants; operates a variety of equipment such as tractors, back-hoe, dump truck, forklift, lawn mowers, flail mowers, string trimmers, hedge trimmers, blowers, and hand tools.
  • Solids Handling: operates pumping equipment to remove municipal sewage sludge from storage lagoons; monitors and adjusts discharge of pumped sludges onto sludge drying beds; uses heavy equipment to mix sludge drying beds and prepare dried solids for disposal.
  • Maintenance Duties: performs custodial duties in outlying facility buildings; maintains appearance of building exteriors and walkways; hoses down various wastewater tanks; performs preventive maintenance on assigned equipment; properly documents completed maintenance; provides support to WRD Operators.

Work Environment & Physical Demands: This position requires a blend of indoor and outdoor responsibilities, including work conducted in and around facility buildings, worksites, and property grounds. Environment includes exposure to diverse weather and potentially hazardous work sites including regular contact to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dust, poor ventilation, inadequate lighting, confined spaces, and chemicals.

Requires performing tasks which include climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, sitting, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and extended periods of strenuous repetitive motions. Requires physical ability to exert up to 75 pounds of force to lift, move and carry objects including the operation of various types of tools and landscape equipment. Requires the ability to drive a motor vehicle.
