Cheer (Fall) - Varsity Assistant Coach - South Medford High School (2026-27)OverviewSalary range is pending final budget approval for the 2026-27 school year; posted salary range is for the 2025-26 school year.Job Title: Assistant Athletic Coach - High SchoolClassification: Extra CompSupervisor: Building PrincipalContract: Athletic SeasonGeneral statements of responsibilities: The Assistant Coach will work to carry out the aims and objectives of the sport program as outlined by the Head Coach. The Assistant Coach instructs athletes in individual and team fundamentals, strategy and physical training necessary for success. The coach should exercise common sense and good judgment when policy coverage is not specified, supervise athletes as assigned, and assume supervision when needed.Supervision ReceivedThe Assistant Coach is responsible to the building principal and the Head Coach.Duties and ResponsibilitiesHave a thorough knowledge of all Athletic Policies endorsed by the Medford School District Board of Education and ensure compliance.Know Oregon School Activities Association rules and regulations and Southern Oregon Conference guidelines; implement and ensure compliance.Refer requests or grievances through proper channels; maintain program morale and cooperation.Know and apply effective safety procedures; plan and implement instruction in safe practices.Administrative DutiesAssist the Head Coach in scheduling and travel arrangements when asked.Work with the Head Coach to prepare and adhere to facility times.Assist with district and OSAA requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent forms, insurance waivers, and academic/residence eligibility.Provide safeguards for maintenance and protection of equipment and facilities and teach the planned safety program.Student ResponsibilitiesSupervise athletes before, during, and after practices and events; provide guidance and safeguards by presence.Follow the Head Coach's program related to injuries, medical attention, and emergencies; work with the athletic trainer on injury prevention, care, and rehabilitation.Direct student managers, assistants and statisticians on respective teams.Determine discipline per policy; communicate with parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible for team rule infractions.Equipment and FacilitiesBe accountable for all equipment; identify lost or stolen equipment, and issue notices as needed.Monitor equipment rooms and the coaches' office; control access as appropriate.Inspect locker rooms before and after practices and games for cleanliness.Secure doors, lights, and locks when leaving the building if custodians are not on duty.Instill in players respect for equipment and school property.Program ResponsibilitiesAssist the Head Coach in carrying out responsibilities; instruct changes in rules and fundamentals.Maintain team statistics and lettering requirements as assigned; work within the Head Coach's framework and philosophy.Attend staff meetings as required; arrive early and stay late to prepare and assist players.Contribute to in-season and off-season conditioning and weight programs.Maintain professional conduct in the presence of players, parents, and spectators.Pursue skill improvement through clinics and resources provided by the Head Coach.Attend most contests when possible and perform other duties as requested by the Head Coach.QualificationsTo perform this position successfully, the following qualifications are required or preferred. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.Minimum Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge of rules and regulations of the sport to which assigned.Knowledge of fundamentals, techniques, and strategies of the sport to which assigned.Knowledge of safety factors involved in the sport assigned.Knowledge of physical ability and limitations at the teaching level.Knowledge of Medford School District Athletic Policies and OSAA Rules and Regulations.Ability to communicate effectively with people.Ability to demonstrate basic skills of the sport to which assigned.Ability to organize, supervise, and evaluate the total sport program.Positive attitude and enthusiasm; willingness to cooperate and adapt.Experience: Previous coaching experience in the sport is preferred; prior participation and teaching experience are also preferred.Education: Valid Oregon teacher certification is preferred; college training in coaching desirable.Physical Demands and Working ConditionsThe following are representative of the physical demands required for this position.
