The City of Ashland is looking for a candidate to perform skilled and semi-skilled work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of street facilities and storm drains; receive, store, and distribute public works equipment and supplies; and perform other work as assigned. As a Utility Worker I, candidates will perform the routine duties under immediate supervision of assigned job activities and work towards achieving an Oregon Class A license.
Upon successful performance of the main job activities and ability to obtain an Oregon Class A license with tanker and air brake endorsements within the first 6 months of hire, candidates may have the opportunity to advance to a Utility Worker II classification.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Depending on assignment may drive pickups or utility trucks, dump or water trucks, and/or other vehicles. May be required to tow a trailer. May operate a backhoe, loader, skid steer, paver and screed, roller, sweeper, or other heavy equipment. May operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools such as jack hammers, compressors, chain saws, cut off saws, pavement saws. Use a variety of computerized devices and tablets. Set up, utilize, and maintain a variety of traffic control equipment.
Use and properly care for a variety of specialized hand tools, vehicles, and equipment; deliver parts, materials, tools, and equipment; perform basic repairs as needed.
Provide technical assistance and participate in the training of staff; assist in the implementation of department/division goals and objectives; participate in safety training programs and other related functions.
Gather and compile data for various programs, projects, and reports; prepare reports related to assigned functions; maintain logs, records, and files in accordance with state and federal laws and regulations and City policies and procedures; provide accurate and legible data input for timesheets, workload planning, and other related documents.
Use of email, cell phone, and/or a two-way radio for dispatching and routine communications.
Perform work involved with the construction, cleaning, maintenance and repair of City streets, sidewalks, storm drains and rights-of-way, including but not limited to:

Maintain proficiency by attending training conferences and meetings, reading materials, and meeting with others in areas of responsibility.
Follow all safety rules and procedures established for City of Ashland employees.
Perform other work as assigned.
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
Education: Possession of a high school diploma or GED.
Experience: No experience required, but must obtain required certifications and licenses within timeframes listed below.
Substitution: Any satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the job proficiently may substitute for the above requirements.
Certificates: Must obtain basic first aid, CPR, Competent Person, and Flagging certifications within six (6) months of appointment.
License: Possession of a current and valid Driver's License, proof of Motor Vehicle Insurance and acceptable driving record. Must have a Class B CDL within 6 months of hire.
Ability to obtain an Oregon Class A license with tanker and air brake endorsements within the first 6 months of hire may present the opportunity to advance to a Utility Worker II classification.
